Wed Movie - Watchmen

Wednesday Movie
Watchmen

File:WatchmenPosterFinal.jpg

This movie was adapted very closely to the limited 12 part issue from 1986 to 1987. I still have those 12 comics today. The only difference was where the ending took place but the plot and the imagery was maintained (some parts frame by frame similarities) in the film directed by Zack Snyder (he directed the movie 300).
The only reason I bought the comics was I was a big fan of the scary looking dude Alan Moore. I followed "The Swamp Thing" on DC comics.

This is one of the more underrated movies that should have won a Academy or two for filming and the story is just incredible!! Great music as well!!

  • RATING
  • Shite - this was inspired when I was watching "The Medallion" with Jackie Chan at the Cinema with Benjy (convinced me to go with him) and after 15 minutes turned to Benjy and said "Ooi Benjy this movie is shit".
  • OKlah - watch it also ok, don't watch oso ok, won't die!
  • Good - well made didn't fall asleep during the movie.
  • Wa Lau - almost life changing

Friday Music - Kate Bush

Catherine Bush or better know as Kate Bush started her career early and was introduced to the music industry by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd fame. Signed by EMI when she was 16 and had her first hit at 19 with "Wuthering Heights". A unique voice and performance which is ageless, which is a joy to listen know as it was 30 odd years ago.

Climb Mt. Kinabalu after a Decade (and be fitter while doing it!)

Posted by Picasa

So what can I say I have the urge to do it again! It has been 10 years since my last climb up that Mountain! So I weighed myself on the 19th July 2010 - 105kg.  Emmm must have a goal that requires me to exercise.
The proof  below that I actually made it (my siblings were very confident I wouldn't make it! Ha!).

The special Millennium Cert

The climb was with JCI City of Singapore with JCI Kota Kinabalu.  We started by having fellowship the night before the climb which include refreshing beverages and got home at 1am. Woke up at 5am and picked up the climbers for the one and a half hour drive to the Mt. K National Park and started climbing at 8am. I got to the rest house (food and bed before the final climb to the peak) at 3pm after wanting to give up almost every ten minutes or  so. Had trouble with the altitude at 10,000 feet. Dizziness and a bit of nausea (just liked being drunk!!!) and decided not to join the guys for the final climb at 2am. When we were woken up at about 1:30am I felt a lot better and decided to go for it. It usually takes climbers to reach the peak at 5:30am, I got there at 9am but I got there! Fortunately it was a clear day and we were allowed to do so. By this time the average climber would reach the rest house for breakfast. Andrew and myself arrived in time for lunch. After enjoying a hot meal and extremely tired with no rest we were told to start our descend. This time the group stuck together and chatted at every rest area not realizing the time. It started to pour down and the trail became a stream and it got dark extremely quick. We got down to the gate at 7pm totally soaked and knackered (me anyway).

I have decided I will want to do it again by this year so I will keep everyone (wife and kids) posted. (I have already postponed it once, it was meant to be done on the anniversary of the climb but I have had no preparation)

Here with the guys, I wanted to give up many many times during this trip, its thanks to friends who urge me on. Oh, thanks for the cigarettes as well Andrew!!

Wed Movie - Piranha 3D (with no 3D)

Wednesday Movie
Piranha 3D 2010

File:Piranha 3d poster.jpg

I had a double header movie gig with Benjie (boy it almost sounds suggestive) watching "Piranha 3D" and "Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D"(without the 3D). But for this Wednesday I will be focusing on Piranha 3D because it has brought me such "pleasure".

Any movie with with actors like Richard Dreyfuss (Academy Award winner), Elizabeth Shue, Ving Rhames, Kelly Brook (why the boys would watch it), Christopher Lloyd and Jerry O'Connel would be impressive. A good ensemble by any means even-though Dreyfuss was a cameo appearance. If you like plenty of scantily clad females and males (who cares about the males) on or near water and gore with abundance and a little more, you will enjoy this movie.

But the strange thing is I did! The gore does get extensive but it is not meant to be taken seriously and I found it hilarious! My Favorited character is Derrick Jones (Jerry O'Connell, a guy who definitely had fun with it!) who did a hilarious job but I don't think  Derrick will be appearing in the next sequel!

Friday Music - Men Without Hats

I enjoyed these New Wave band from Quebec, Canada (eei). Mainly comprising the  Doroschuk brothers and  lead by Ivan. It has got its second life from GLEE (Artie is one of my favorite character in GLEE especially his take on "Dancing With Myself", but I digress).  But they have been many covers including "Family Guy", Crazy Frog. Enjoy!

The Original

The GLEE Version

The Family Guy version

The How not to dance version (spasm dance?)

Crazy Frog!

Homer did it too!!

Strange days at the office.....

Its been a frustrating almost two weeks had trouble getting my emails properly and could not log in to any password related sites including my blogging site. I am sucker for comfort as well, I just prefer to work off my office desktop and not the notebook at home which is used by everyone else in the house. This one is all mine!

So its good to be back after about 2 weeks!!

Eulogy - Petagas War Memorial (1999)

EULOGY BY TAN SRI BEN STEPHENS
These was done for some Australia visitors on the way to visit war memorials in Sabah in 1999 but was never used. (Labuan, Kundasang and Sandakan)
1.   World War II ended fifty four years ago and it seem like yesterday.

2.   Memories of its violence, destruction and the people who gave their lives and those who survived defending our freedom are remembered by some of us and are  among us here today.

3.   However among the young generations, it will slowly fade and thereby oblivious to the fact that our sovereignty came with sacrifice and suffering by others.

4.   Therefore memorials like this one, the Sandakan War Memorial, the Kinabalu War Memorial and others in this State have their importance in educating and reminding our present and future generation.

5.   This memorial, the Petegas Memorial Garden is dedicated to the Kinabalu Guerrillas numbering 300 young men from various communities and family members of the guerrillas and sympathisers alike who suffered and sacrificed their lives.

6.   The Guerrilla movement was organised by a brave and patriotic man by the name of  Albert Kwok in 1942.

7.   In September 1943 information was obtained that the Japanese was intending to conscript 2000 youths of Sabah to strengthen the front-line defence.

8.   This was thwarted on the night of 9th October 1943, by the surprise attack by the guerrillas on the Japanese Police Station and military Police  Headquarters in then known as Jesselton, now Kota Kinabalu .

9.   The mainly machete armed men killed scores of Japanese and burned down a custom godown.

10.This severely discouraged the Japanese and the proposed conscription was abandoned.

11.However reprisal was implemented as the Japanese had reinforcement from Kuching.  The Guerrillas retreated to the hills behind Mengattal.

12.Most of the members of the Kinabalu Guerrilla surrendered within two months as the enemy had threatened and tortured members of their families, innocent women and children alike.

13.On the 21st January 1944, 176 men of the Kinabalu Guerrilla including my father, Jules P. Stephens, and sympathisers were executed and buried in the vicinity of this memorial garden.

14.Others amounting 131 were sent to Labuan to serve various terms of imprisonment.  117 of them died due to inhumane treatment which included torture and starvation.

15.After the war a committee headed by few surving  members of  the guerilla force and their families including myself reburied those who had been killed together with the remains from Labuan in this common burial ground.

16.This Garden has been improved through the years and I commend Kota Kinabalu Municipal Council, whose President is with us today, Datuk Adeline Leong and Officers of the Council for a job well done. Thank you MPKK.

17.Each year an Official Memorial is held on the 21st January in memory of the gallant man who fought against the Japanese Occupation forces.

18.More can be done in Sabah and this is the duty all including NGO’s such as Kota Kinabalu Junior Chamber, the Government and public alike.

19.Let us not stop here but instead, together, go forward to ensure the preservations of  our history and heritage.

Thank You.

Would have Been My Parents' 59th Anniversary

Posted by Picasa

On the 25th of August 2010 would have been my parents' 59th Anniversary.  Unfortunately my dad passed away  on the 4th September 2003. We were however fortunate to have celebrated they 50th Anniversary in 2001. Dad decided a week before the date to have a do and to invite their close friends and family to the house, We had mass for mum and dad to renew their vows as well. Had tents erected, Hyatt to cater the food and some roast lamb and lots of dessert. On the day my parents stayed mostly in their bedroom as we got the place ready for the mass, the tents, the dinning tables, organizing parking, covering the defects of the house with material and lots of flowers. The joy was to see their face of utter shock and joy and appreciation.
Glad dad decided to do it! Heres to you mum and dad, God Bless!

These are pictures of the weeding on the 25th August 1951 at Sacred Heart Cathedral in then Jesselton (Kot Kinabalu) and the party afterwards. This period ooze style and class not needing the glamor of current weddings.

Mum and dad also had a hard time deciding to celebrate their 25th Anniversary in 1976 as dad's brother was killed in a plane crash in that year. They went ahead and we all enjoyed it. It was held in Hyatt the people who catered 25 years later.

Wed Movie! The Elephant Man

Wednesday Movie
The Elephant Man (1980)

One of John Hurts best roles was the Elephant Man.  A movie I think I watch by myself at boarding school as a teenager in Singapore. Not your regular movie to go to for a teenager. We could only get out of the school compound on Saturdays after lunch (the quickest lunch of the week) and we had to get back by 6pm.  Enjoyed it and was my first experience proper with a black and white movie in a cinema. Directed by David Lynch of Twin Peaks fame. And would you believe it Produced by Mel Brooks!

Rating: Wa Lau - almost life changing

Friday Music - The Style Council / Peter Weller

The Style Council were a 80's band with its lead singer Paul Weller. Good mellow stuff very unlike the music of that time. I still listen to Paul Weller's stuff till today.

Wed Movie! Dead Ringer (1964)

Wednesday Movie
Dead Ringer (1964)
File:DR1964.jpg
Watch it with Cinda this morning after sending the kids to school. Enjoyed it even though the script would never stand to today's standards (not making a mess after blowing up someones head very unlike "Pulp Fiction"). Great story, wonderful filming and great actors. Rating : Good - well made didn't fall asleep during the movie

Friday Music -Erasure

Erasure comprise of Andy Bell (vocals) and Vince Clarke on Synth/keybards. Vince Clarke was the founding member of Depache Mode and was part of Yazoo with Alison Moyet. Erasure started in the 80's and are still around. Included below is a cover of ABBA's "Take a Chance on Me" and the original from ABBA which is pretty hilarious!

Wed Movie! The Wild Geese

Wednesday Movie
The Wild Geeese

"The Wild Geese" (named after a 17th Century Irish Mercenaries) the first movie as a 10 year old in which I understood the plot and was totally absorbed by the characters and even cried when Hardy Kruger's character died and the tension he had with an African man being a South African. It was a significant leap for me to understand and empathized with the story. Star studded movie with Richard Burton, Roger Moore and Richard Harris heading the movie with no female actors or love interest. Great story, great plot.
Rating: Wah Lau!!

Wed Movie! Adaptation

Wednesday Movie
ADAPTATION

I must admit I didn't enjoy this movie. Cinda agreed with me. The movie had great actors - Nick Cage and Merly Streep - but the story is beyond me. I researched it and the movie was loved by critics.
This however inspired me to have a system of grading the movies for the Wed Movies;

This movie however is special it has two grades - Wa Lau Shite - life changingly shite!
Just checked out the trailer ...maybe I will try another go at the movie!!

What to Do As A Father! - An Essay Road Trip

In 2006 Ashe (my daughter) then Primary 3 student was given a mid term assignment to write about her up coming holidays and hand it in after the holidays. To be honest, Cinda and myself had nothing planned other than being relieved that we could sleep in a little bit. So we decided to plan a driving trip to visit my eldest bro Jules and Tips the wife and my grand nephew (and godson) Damon. They live in Keningau (about 138km from KK) then it is a relatively short drive (50km) to Uncle Richard and Cousin Gerald diary farm in Sapong (just after Tenom).

So we decided on a 4 day break. First is the drive over Crocker Range which reaches as high as 4000 ft above sea level. Views are mainly secondary forested area. At the highest point at Gunung Emas we had a coffee break before heading to Tambunan. The main interior of the Dusun folks. A political stronghold of PBS.

Then to Keningau. The name Keningau is derived from Kayu manis (Cinnamon) which apparently grew in abundance in the area. Its guarded by two major ranges the Crocker on the west and Trus Mardi in the East and South. My dad was the District Officer (the first local DO I might add) in the early 1960's when my brother John was born. Jules now resides in the town. (further details of Keningau refer to http://www.kinabaluweb.com/keningau.html)

Posted by Picasa

The drive took was enjoyable and the kids go through many phases - excitement (early in the drive), curious, hunger, boredom which usually leads to sleep and then ....ahhh silence.

Posted by Picasa

In Keningau we stayed with Jules who is a proud owner of a farm, about 20 minutes away. Here you see him showing a cocoa pod to my kids.

Posted by Picasa
His farm includes papaya, coffee, cocoa and the main cash crop oil palm.

Posted by Picasa

Tristan and myself next to a coffee tree.

Posted by Picasa

Coffee beans before they are plucked, dried and fried and grinded. Throw it in a sock and pour hot water...ahhhhh! (I think I need a coffee break) Ashe of course had samples.

The cocoa pods on a tree.

Posted by Picasa

Cocoa is tasty, sweet-sour taste. The beans are used for chocalate and made into cocoa butter (which are used for cosmetics as well) Tried to get Ashe to eat one but was reluctant. She however kept a bean for a sample for her essay.

Posted by Picasa

The next day we visited Uncle Richard, Unty Pu Chan and Gerald. Below is the house they live in which was built in 1950's and renovated in early 2000. It is beautiful and the nearest thing to paradise. My grandad John Baxter who was English came pre WWII and worked as a Plantation manager, married a local and never went back. He passed away at 90 odd years old. He was believed to have brought in Coffee and Cocoa into Sabah. We had few acres of coffee trees at the back of the house. As a kid on holiday he would make us pick coffee beans, and paid us 5 cent a bag. We then put in on a corrugated roof to let it dry. But it was satisfying to drink coffee from your own land. But we did feed quite a few mosquitoes in the process. But it is currently a diary farm 500 odd cows if I am not mistaken (all the milk you can drink). Real fresh milk you can smell the cow!!!

Gerald's 4x4 BJ40 Land Cruiser.

We of course visited the diary farm and said hello to the cows.

Here Cinda with the kids and Damon. All in all it was a great experience for all of us!!

Posted by Picasa

Special thanks to Jules, Tips and Damon for welcoming us in their home. Tips has the best recipe for pork belly barbeque which I always look forward to.

Posted by Picasa

On the way back home and "Are we there yet!?" and "I'm tired!" and "I need to go wee wee!" and "I'am hungry!!".... when are they going to sleep?

Posted by Picasa

Without saying, Ashe of course got a 'A' for her essay and we had a very educative, fun and enjoyable time together!!!
