Friday Music - Roger Wang and Friends

Last week Cinda got a call from Claude if we were interested in attended a show by Roger (her hubby) and his bunch of talented friends for a special show to raise funds for a school. Cinda miracalously managed to get sitters for the two boys (thanks Bree) which open up a enjoyable and very inspiring show by Roger and his buddies for the friday evening concert.



Sometimes we tend to forget how good and talented those who are closer to home (Roger's Studio is across the road from my office) and it reminded me of the joy of great live music. It also open my eyes to the great talent out here in Sabah and a Website that promotes it - http://sabahsongs.wordpress.com/2011/05/07/roger-wang-friends-2011-fundraiser-at-the-sabah-trade-centre//.
It has great pictures of the concert  compared to my dodgy ones from my HTC Incredible S phone (wanna see my Incredible S is one of my friendly openers now). My memorable bits is the "Bojangles" number, the song for his sis and bro-in-law for their wedding and with Jonathan Tse (the coolest dude/pastor around!!!)

 Neatly presented including the introductions in the beginning with plenty of humour. This is a side of Roger you mostly don't get to see. He seem serious including his music but get to know him a little there is that keen sense of humour which is clearly seen with the number he did for his sister and brother-in-law's wedding, a mixture of  Rogers type of music and hard rock!!
I also appreciated the fact that he gave a bit of explanation to all the music and his great introduction to all the other performers as well.

If any of you are into cantopop and considered one of the gods of music in Hong Kong Jacky Cheung selected  Roger's song titled 'Love Scale' for his current album.

Friday Music - Iggy Pop

James Newell Osterberg Jr better know as IGGY POP, born on 16 April 1947, he will be 64 in a week or so. His performance on American Idol, shirtless I might add, at 63 years of age is incredible. I am 21 years younger and would make people go on a diet if I performed shirtless!!!!

 He was never that popular in Malaysia, twenty years ago going to all the record shops and asking for "Iggy Pop" and was  return with puzzled looks from the sales girls. They tried to be helpful and ask for the name of the album and I said "Blah Blah Blah". Then they started to get annoyed because they believe I was trying to be a smart arse!!

The Boomtown Rats fronted by Sir Bob Geldof (whose major fame came from LIVE AID). Had a few hits but an anthem all of us who have a certain dislike for mondays "I don't Like Mondays".

Friday Music - Frankie Goes to Hollywood

My favorite band of the  80's even if they were only as good as their first Album. Iconic music and white t-shirts. When I first heard "Relax", however it grew on me and do have the "Welcome to the Pleasuredome" double LP and some of their singles as well. Now all I need is a record player!!!

Emmm what can I say about Rick Astley.... white dude that don't sound like a white dude?!!! Well this is dedicated to Cin and Emma, who in their teenage years went to Rick's concert and scream their head off!!!!

Fronted by Morrissey and guitar by Johnny Marr started in the early 80's. At times humorous and haunting music with long titles for songs. My favorite is still "Heaven Only Knows How Miserable I am" or something like that!

Big Audio dynamite (BAD) was formed in 1984 (high / secondary school times of my life) by Mick Jones of  The Clash. I played BAD alot in my car in the 90's on my long drives. Enjoyed it, never really remembered the name of the tracks.

Friday Music - Kitaro

Kitaro  (Japanese Masanori Takahashi) a new age multi instrumental, zone out, meditation music, I listened to in the 90's. His music was most popular than and was heard at malls, events and scores for movies, especially in Asia. When he first entered Malaysia for a concert in those days, rumor was he had trouble entering due to his long hair. I just realised he did some Christmas songs as well.

Friday Music - Kate Bush

Catherine Bush or better know as Kate Bush started her career early and was introduced to the music industry by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd fame. Signed by EMI when she was 16 and had her first hit at 19 with "Wuthering Heights". A unique voice and performance which is ageless, which is a joy to listen know as it was 30 odd years ago.

Ahh nothing like one hit wonders and going thru these compilations does trigger off pleasant, discomforting and times traumatic memories of the past. The wonders of puberty!!

Friday Music - Men Without Hats

I enjoyed these New Wave band from Quebec, Canada (eei). Mainly comprising the  Doroschuk brothers and  lead by Ivan. It has got its second life from GLEE (Artie is one of my favorite character in GLEE especially his take on "Dancing With Myself", but I digress).  But they have been many covers including "Family Guy", Crazy Frog. Enjoy!

Erasure comprise of Andy Bell (vocals) and Vince Clarke on Synth/keybards. Vince Clarke was the founding member of Depache Mode and was part of Yazoo with Alison Moyet. Erasure started in the 80's and are still around. Included below is a cover of ABBA's "Take a Chance on Me" and the original from ABBA which is pretty hilarious!

Go West started in 1982 and was part of my play list as a teenager. But I only listened to a couple of they song. But do not get mixed up with Pet SHop Boy's song entitled "Go West" which was pretty cool as well. Whats with the big monkey wrench in the video "i close my eyes"??!!!

Friday Music - Giorgio Moroder

Giogio (Hansjoerg) Moroder (a Mario Bro spitting image with his really thick mustache) Italian musician/producer from the 70's , godfather of synthesizer movement, the precursor to new wave, house and techno music. He founded the Oasis Records. He won three Academy Awards for the Soundtrack for "Midnight Express", "Take my Breath Away" from Top Gun and "Flashdance" - "What a Feeling..Flashdance". He has collaborated with Blondie, Cheap Trick, David Bowie,Donna Summer, Liza Minelli etc.... the list goes on. Enjoy!!!

Friday Music - Blondie

Blondie started in the Mid 70's and got big in the 80's. The lead singer Debbie Harry at that time was every boys dream girl. Introduced in the early 80's to me by my brother Mike. They had an eclectic mix of music that compasses raggae, pop, disco and rap (!). The song "Call Me" was made famous in Rigard Gere's movie "American Gigolo". The first song I heard was "Heart of Glass". Below are my favourites "Sunday Girl" and "Denis".

Does anyone remember GAZEBO (another spaso name)? when they were famous for "I like Chopin". Another Ah Beng favorite of the 80's. "WAT! I Loooove choh pin!" Ha ha enjoy!!

Friday Music...err.. on a Saturday... ones I never liked - Modern Talking!!

First of all what a name "Modern Talking", more like Euro thrash!! They were popular in the 80's especially among the Ah Bengs in Singapore (what! u thing I scared by you ah!!! Phua Chu Kang is a grown up ah beng!) But deep down I do miss them but don't tell anyone!! I used to hassle my nephew who is a DJ to play them at the clubs he was working at. He however did one day at D'Junction once to my pleasant surprise - almost got up and danced... can you even dance to Modern Talking!!!??? Enjoy the music and try not to puke!!!

Friday Music - THE THE...and I am not stuttering!

THE THE was a band that was introduced to by Ronald a boarding mate of mine form KL. The album was "Mind Bomb".

I had an opportunity to watch them while I was in the states in 1989. It was a bit of a drive (70 miles to Minneapolis) from St. Cloud and nobody had heard of them. I had trouble with the name of the band..th th th ..... stutter.... so I missed out, but the good news is they are still around!!
