The Remains of the Day

A movie I watched on satellite TV over the weekend. These days movies are made for speed and activity to maintain the attention of the viewer. However, even though I found it boring many years ago
I now enjoyed it because it took its time to tell a story of a novel written by Kazou Izhiguro (from Nagasaki, Japan - moved to England in 1960 and became a English Citizen in 1982).

Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thomson, Christopher Reeve and a young Hugh Grant (before being typecast), an incredible cast.

The story revolves around the head butler, Mr. Stevens (Hopkins) from a period in the 1930's to 1950's. His sense of duty and professionalism and how it effected his relationships (with people he served, his father and love interest). A very touching and moving movie if you enjoy following a movie that even allows you to enjoy the English countryside. 

Rating - Good - well made didn't fall asleep during the movie (Unlike the first time I watched it).

Rango

It was my son's 8th birthday and after dinner we went as a family to watch Rango, a western with lizards, reptiles and amphibians and few other beast thrown in. A spaghetti western with the director of "Pirates of the Caribbean" Gore Verbinski and the incredible voice of Johnny Depp (who seems to be making more and more movies for his kids). Visually incredibly stunning, and I actually forget it is animated movie and appreciated as a great movie. There is a cameo of Clint Eastwood as well!! An unusual story and a interesting character in Rango makes this movie a enjoyable movie to watch for kids and Adults alike!!! We all enjoyed it except for the 2 year old who prefers to be mobile at all times!!! Watch it!!

Rating - Good - well made didn't fall asleep during the movie.

The Green Hornet

To the movies with Tristan after the completion of his tests at school. Enjoyed it but nobody beats Bruce Lee!!! Nobody!!! My daughter likes Jay Chou's representation of Kato but if you ask the guys his just a poof ball compared to Bruce Lee. Me I enjoyed Seth Rogen's version of it and we just got to move on in life after all there is only ever gonna be one Bruce Lee.

Black Swan

This is a movie I have to confess, I watched it because my missus wanted to, and I made very little complaints   or sarcastic comments (I was really tempted though!!!) I was amazed I didn't fall asleep, it was well scripted, great actors and the story kept you on. But I just didn't enjoy it.



It was "Trainspotting" for ballet, not realizing what is reality anymore, however I did prefer "Trainspotting" a lot better.Emm maybe I should of reviewed "Trainspotting" instead........Well in my opinion go watch "Trainspotting" instead !!!

Rating - OKlah - watch it also ok, don't watch oso ok, won't die!

127 Hours

Incredible true story about a bloke name Aron Ralston (James Franco) who went out hiking (Canyoneering is the lingo used) on  a weekend at Canyonland National Park. Goes through an area called Blue John Canyon. Falls in a narrow passage and a big stone wedges his right hand tightly. This is his life in 127 hours. He eventually removes his hand by breaking it and surgically amputating it with a very blunt knife.

He realizes what is important to him during this time. And the simplest mistakes and things we take for granted. It reminds me to look and cherish what is really important to me and how situations can change so quickly.

The film was directed by  the Danny Boyle (of "Slumdog Millionaire" fame) and  he teamed up with AR Rahman who did the score for the movie. Brilliantly filmed with 95% of it with James Franco and the rock a the main actors!!

The movie blew me away and was totally unexpected as I had very little expectation or knew a great deal about the movie. Incredibly well filmed (trailer gives us a glimpse of it) and it has an incredible lesson to us all - please watch it!!!!

Rating: Wa Lau - almost life changing (actually it is life changing)

Wed Movie - Piranha 3D (with no 3D)

Piranha 3D 2010

I had a double header movie gig with Benjie (boy it almost sounds suggestive) watching "Piranha 3D" and "Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D"(without the 3D). But for this Wednesday I will be focusing on Piranha 3D because it has brought me such "pleasure".

Any movie with with actors like Richard Dreyfuss (Academy Award winner), Elizabeth Shue, Ving Rhames, Kelly Brook (why the boys would watch it), Christopher Lloyd and Jerry O'Connel would be impressive. A good ensemble by any means even-though Dreyfuss was a cameo appearance. If you like plenty of scantily clad females and males (who cares about the males) on or near water and gore with abundance and a little more, you will enjoy this movie.

 But the strange thing is I did! The gore does get extensive but it is not meant to be taken seriously and I found it hilarious! My Favorited character is Derrick Jones (Jerry O'Connell, a guy who definitely had fun with it!) who did a hilarious job but I don't think  Derrick will be appearing in the next sequel!

The Elephant Man (1980)

One of John Hurts best roles was the Elephant Man.  A movie I think I watch by myself at boarding school as a teenager in Singapore. Not your regular movie to go to for a teenager. We could only get out of the school compound on Saturdays after lunch (the quickest lunch of the week) and we had to get back by 6pm.  Enjoyed it and was my first experience proper with a black and white movie in a cinema. Directed by David Lynch of Twin Peaks fame. And would you believe it Produced by Mel Brooks!

Dead Ringer (1964)

Watch it with Cinda this morning after sending the kids to school. Enjoyed it even though the script would never stand to today's standards (not making a mess after blowing up someones head very unlike "Pulp Fiction"). Great story, wonderful filming and great actors. Rating : Good - well made didn't fall asleep during the movie

The Wild Geeese

"The Wild Geese" (named after a 17th Century Irish Mercenaries) the first movie as a 10 year old in which I understood the plot and was totally absorbed by the characters and even cried when Hardy Kruger's character died and the tension he had with an African man being a South African. It was a significant leap for me to understand and empathized with the story. Star studded movie with Richard Burton, Roger Moore and Richard Harris heading the movie with no female actors or love interest. Great story, great plot.

ADAPTATION

I must admit I didn't enjoy this movie. Cinda agreed with me. The movie had great actors - Nick Cage and Merly Streep - but the story is beyond me. I researched it and the movie was loved by critics.
This however inspired me to have a system of grading the movies for the Wed Movies;

This movie however is special it has two grades - Wa Lau Shite - life changingly shite!
Just checked out the trailer ...maybe I will try another go at the movie!!

INCEPTION

I watch this movie last week with Benjamin. I notice today there are discussion in my Facebook with two different groups of friends, so I guess it is generating a lot of interest.

The idea of the movie is to be able to enter someones dream, or create a dream from a third person by an architect (sounds matrix like) and steal secrets. It gets complicated when a dream within a dream is created up to 4 levels ("?! I'm not too sure) . You need to really concentrate throughout the movie. But it is pretty easy with some good actors including Leo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Cillian Murphy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (the kid from "Third Rock from the Sun") and Tom Hardy (I like him and found out his playing Mad Max in the next sequel - I guess Mel is getting on and a bit unpopular at the moment). I believe Hardy would be a good candidate for James Bond.

The movie was directed by Christopher Nolan which has his dark and gloomy presence about it just like the last two Batmen movies directed by him. I believe it was about 150 minutes of continuous entertaining and enjoyable concentration to keep up with the movie. Visually stunning.

Shawshank Redemption

One of my all time favourites that was a pleasant surprise when I first watch it. It inspired me, that there is hope when there seem none...even if you have to crawl through crap as “Andy” (Tim Robbins) did. It taught me about perseverance, a good plan, execution, patience and good wise friends. It is ageless. It was a box office certified flop when it was first release (but was a critic favorite) but it has now a cult following.
I made time to watch it again at the end of last year on my own during Christmas break in Sydney and enjoyed as when I watched it the first time.
