Things to do with the family - Tip of Borneo Part II

Recently Cinda and myself decided that we needed a break and a good way to do this is to include  a long drive.   We decided that a revisit to Kudat is in order and the tip of Borneo - Simpang Mengayau (SM). I did a search to find some decent place closer to the Tip of Borneo to enjoy the beaches there. I came across The Tip of Borneo Resort for only RM150 during the off season even though is was during the 1st May Labour holidays. Cinda sorted out the payment and realized it was owned by a friend of ours, Tommy Lam!!

So off we headed north to Kudat in our trusty Toyota Avanza. The boys were particularly excited about it!

Tested out the GPS on the phone even though I didn't need it. The country side was good with a bit of paddy fields and oil palm plantation. The drive was about 186KM.

As we arrive SM and the first view was breath taking, one of the cleaner beaches I have been too in a long time.

The beach was about 150m from the Resort (you can just about see the roof from the beach)

Forgot Ashe was in Australia and registered her as well!!

We then decided to do a walk about before swimming at the beach.

Beautiful day for a walk about and after 8 years there has been some changes and places to stay and eat.

Then to the beach for a swim. There were hardly anybody the next group of people were maybe 500m away!

The water was clear and cool and stayed at the beach until it got dark. We went back to the Resort to shower and change. Now everybody was hungry. We headed to for Tip Top Bar and Restaurant at Tampat Do Aman for some food to load up after a long day about 500m form where we were staying. The owner, Howard Stanton was friendly and enjoyable to be with. (thanks for the beer Howard!!) The restaurant had your western and local fare. But beware the chicken wings are hot and spicy as my son found out. It is a lovely place to hang have some food and a couple of beers. The rrive to Kudat Town will take another 20 minutes or so that will just have to wait until the next day.

Next day was rainy and for some reason I had a headache. We had the complimentary breakfast at the Resort and headed for Kudat Town. The roads are interesting here as at quite a few T junctions, both direction could get you to your destination!!!

You can actually get the KK and Kudat both ways. I personally prefer to turn left to head to Kudat eventhough it points to the right!

I enjoy the architecture and the old houses that we pass by to our drive to kudat. The town itself is pretty ordinary but the seafood is excellent.

I enjoy going to the same corner stall next to the fish market every time I head this way and this is no different.

The food was excellent than back to the Resort for a swim and nap. We finally checked out at 5pm with Tommy's blessings and headed back to KK. We stopped half way for some really yummy BBQ corn. Yummy and we arrived back in KK for dinner at about 7pm at Kopi Ping. Chat with Ashe on Skpe.
All in all was one of the most relaxing trip we had, wished we booked an extra day!!!!

Things to do with the family - Tip of Borneo part 1

(Part 1 - 2003 & Part II - 2011)
Kudat town and district is the northern part of Borneo, "the left year of the dog". It is a town I have visited many times over the past 15 odd years. The place my dad was born.

It was founded by a bloke by the name of AH Everett under the care of the British North Borneo Company in 1881 and was the first capital of North Borneo. But problems with pirates, the BNBC shifted the capital to Sandakan in 1883 (the year Tottenham Hotspurs Football Club was born, but I digress). It has the oldest golf course in Sabah, established in  1906. It is a pretty quiet town but it has beautiful beaches including the Tip of Borneo - Simpang Mengayau - most northerly part of Borneo. Some records suggests that the fleet of Ferdinand Magellan stop here for forty two days for some ship repairs as well.

My visit to Simpang Mengayau in December 2003 with Cinda (wife), Ashe and Tristan (kids) and Ursula (sister) was brief to say the least as we stayed in town at the Kudat Golf and Marina Resort. It is more accessibly and the road signs are decent (there were none exsistent about 10 years ago!).

The seafood in town is great if you know where to look (more in Part II). Then at night we ended up at KFC!!! And the kids and myself only swam at the pool at the resort.

Wed Movie - Tirante El Blanco

Wednesday Movie

Tirante El Blanco

The best thing about the movie is the poster.
A time waster, if you havee the DVD dispose of it or delete it if its a soft copy. I'm not going to rate it because its a bloody waste of time to watch!!!
From Wiki
The film was shot in English, even though it was shot partially in Spain and stars Spanish actors. According to Bernat Baldomero, press chief of the film's production company, "the film was shot in English to universalize the work and spread our literature and culture all over the world".[1]

Watch "Julia's Eyes" by Guillem Morales, a Spanish movie spoken in spanish!

Friday Music - Roger Wang and Friends

Last week Cinda got a call from Claude if we were interested in attended a show by Roger (her hubby) and his bunch of talented friends for a special show to raise funds for a school. Cinda miracalously managed to get sitters for the two boys (thanks Bree) which open up a enjoyable and very inspiring show by Roger and his buddies for the friday evening concert.

Roger-Wang-_-Friends-2011-poster__web__resized.jpg

Sometimes we tend to forget how good and talented those who are closer to home (Roger's Studio is across the road from my office) and it reminded me of the joy of great live music. It also open my eyes to the great talent out here in Sabah and a Website that promotes it - http://sabahsongs.wordpress.com/2011/05/07/roger-wang-friends-2011-fundraiser-at-the-sabah-trade-centre//.
It has great pictures of the concert  compared to my dodgy ones from my HTC Incredible S phone (wanna see my Incredible S is one of my friendly openers now). My memorable bits is the "Bojangles" number, the song for his sis and bro-in-law for their wedding and with Jonathan Tse (the coolest dude/pastor around!!!)

Neatly presented including the introductions in the beginning with plenty of humour. This is a side of Roger you mostly don't get to see. He seem serious including his music but get to know him a little there is that keen sense of humour which is clearly seen with the number he did for his sister and brother-in-law's wedding, a mixture of  Rogers type of music and hard rock!!
I also appreciated the fact that he gave a bit of explanation to all the music and his great introduction to all the other performers as well.

If you wanna know Roger better click here - Post 1, Post 2 and Post 3

If any of you are into cantopop and considered one of the gods of music in Hong Kong Jacky Cheung selected  Roger's song titled 'Love Scale' for his current album.
I better stop now I am starting to sound like a groupie and I think I leave that to his wife and daughter!!!
Cheers Roger great Show and THANKS!!!! ( a yearly event....?!)

I personally prefer it with Mia...

Friday Music - Iggy Pop

James Newell Osterberg Jr better know as IGGY POP, born on 16 April 1947, he will be 64 in a week or so. His performance on American Idol, shirtless I might add, at 63 years of age is incredible. I am 21 years younger and would make people go on a diet if I performed shirtless!!!!

He was never that popular in Malaysia, twenty years ago going to all the record shops and asking for "Iggy Pop" and was  return with puzzled looks from the sales girls. They tried to be helpful and ask for the name of the album and I said "Blah Blah Blah". Then they started to get annoyed because they believe I was trying to be a smart arse!!

This video made to be save for public consumption in the 80', I wonder if Iggy Pop hates it??!!!

He originally did "China Girl" which David Bowie covered.

Wed Movie - Invictus

Wednesday Movie

Invictus

File:HumanFactorInvictus.jpg

An uplifting movie with Morgan Freeman as Mandela and Matt Damon as Francois Pienaar. It a story of reconciliation and unity among diversity and sports is the glue that binds it was produced and directed by Clint Eastwood.

A very inspirational piece with great admiration for Mandela. I wish we had someone like him in our midst as we have a potent mix of race and religion in our politics. God help us all!!!

The poem "Invictus" (by William Ernest Henley, a victorian poet) that inspired Mendela during his 27 years of imprisonment.

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Friday Music - Frankie Goes to Hollywood

My favorite band of the  80's even if they were only as good as their first Album. Iconic music and white t-shirts. When I first heard "Relax", however it grew on me and do have the "Welcome to the Pleasuredome" double LP and some of their singles as well. Now all I need is a record player!!!

They still have a website and a facebook fan site.

Wed Movie- The Remains of the Day

Wednesday Movie

The Remains of the Day

A movie I watched on satellite TV over the weekend. These days movies are made for speed and activity to maintain the attention of the viewer. However, even though I found it boring many years ago
I now enjoyed it because it took its time to tell a story of a novel written by Kazou Izhiguro (from Nagasaki, Japan - moved to England in 1960 and became a English Citizen in 1982).

Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thomson, Christopher Reeve and a young Hugh Grant (before being typecast), an incredible cast.

The story revolves around the head butler, Mr. Stevens (Hopkins) from a period in the 1930's to 1950's. His sense of duty and professionalism and how it effected his relationships (with people he served, his father and love interest). A very touching and moving movie if you enjoy following a movie that even allows you to enjoy the English countryside.

Rating - Good - well made didn't fall asleep during the movie (Unlike the first time I watched it).

Friday Music - Rick Astley

Emmm what can I say about Rick Astley.... white dude that don't sound like a white dude?!!! Well this is dedicated to Cin and Emma, who in their teenage years went to Rick's concert and scream their head off!!!!
Consider yourself being RickRolled!! ... Wikipedia can explain it better!

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A still photo of the YouTube video of "Never Gonna Give You Up", the song played when viewers are Rickrolled.
Rickrolling is an Internet meme[1][2] typically involving the music video for the 1987 Rick Astley song "Never Gonna Give You Up". The meme is a bait and switch: a person provides ahyperlink that they claim is relevant to the topic at hand, but the link actually takes the user to the Astley video. The link can be masked or obfuscated in some manner so that the user cannot determine the true destination of the link without clicking. When a person clicks on the link and is led to the web page, he or she is said to have been "rickrolled". Rickrolling has extended beyond web links to playing the video or song disruptively in other situations, including public places;[2] this culminated when Astley and the song made a surprise appearance in the 2008 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade,[1] a televised event with tens of millions of viewers.

Its a Turdday - Definition of Poop

Its a another Thursday!!! So I was curious and did some research of the word 'poop' which came back some interesting results which of course came the obvious and a part of a boat superstructure of a ship!

Wikipedia
Poop deck From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Poop deck of a model of the Soleil-Royal, as seen from the forecastleIn naval architecture, a poop deck is a deck that forms the roof of a cabin built in the aft(rear) part of the superstructure of a ship.
The name originates from the French word for sternla poupe, from Latin puppis. Thus the poop deck is technically called a stern deck, which in sailing ships was usually elevated as the roof of the stern or "after" cabin, also known as the "poop cabin". In sailing ships, with the helmsman at the stern, an elevated position was ideal for bothnavigation and observation of the crew and sails.
The fantail is an overhang at the extreme rear of the ship, aft of the poop deck and closer to level with the main deck.[1][2] On a stern wheel steamboat, the fantail supports the large paddle wheel and is typically angled upwards so the shaft of the paddle wheel can sit higher than the main deck. On some steamboats, the extreme end of the fantail supports "monkey" rudders that mimic the operation of the main rudders in order to provide additional steering control.
On modern, motorized warships, the ship functions which were once carried out on the poop deck have been moved to the bridge, usually located on the superstructure in the center of the ship or the island on the starboard side in the case of aircraft carriers.
In nautical parlance, "to be pooped" means to have a wave come over the stern from abaft.

To have a wave go over the rear end of the ship is "to be pooped"!!!!!!

Urban Dictionary defines it as;

poop5292 up679 down
Bodily waste of varying color, viscosity, shape, odor and texture. Usually exits the body through your pooper, speed, noise and degree of pain may vary depending on what you ate.
even the soda at taco bell makes me poop.

The poop shot out of my butt at rapid fire speed.

As the poop hit the water, it was immediately lost to sight.

Wed Movie - Rango

Wednesday Movie

Rango

File:Rango2011Poster.jpg

It was my son's 8th birthday and after dinner we went as a family to watch Rango, a western with lizards, reptiles and amphibians and few other beast thrown in. A spaghetti western with the director of "Pirates of the Caribbean" Gore Verbinski and the incredible voice of Johnny Depp (who seems to be making more and more movies for his kids). Visually incredibly stunning, and I actually forget it is animated movie and appreciated as a great movie. There is a cameo of Clint Eastwood as well!! An unusual story and a interesting character in Rango makes this movie a enjoyable movie to watch for kids and Adults alike!!! We all enjoyed it except for the 2 year old who prefers to be mobile at all times!!! Watch it!!

Friday Music - The Smiths / Morrissey

Fronted by Morrissey and guitar by Johnny Marr started in the early 80's. At times humorous and haunting music with long titles for songs. My favorite is still "Heaven Only Knows How Miserable I am" or something like that!
